Debt collectors arrested by federal agents

Seven debt collectors, part of a debt collection agency called William, Scott, & Associates, were arrested by federal agents on November 18, 2014 in Georgia. This is a crackdown on illegal debt collection that puts other debt collectors on notice that the federal government is going after those who violate debt collection laws. Debt collectors must follow rules, and when they break those rules, they are committing crimes. Prosecutors say that these debt collectors used illegal methods to collect debts, by claiming to be detectives and investigators for local law enforcement agencies. They even claimed to be part of the US Justice Department. All these lies were illegal efforts to collect debts.

This affects around 77 million people in the US, which is an estimate of the number of people so behind on their debts that they have been placed in collections.
