Right to Dismiss a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy

If you file a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy, and later decide that you do not want to be involved in it anymore for any reason, do you have a right to dismiss the case? The answer is no. Unlike a Chapter 13, you cannot freely dismiss a Chapter 7 case on your own. Situations where this arises is when someone files a Chapter 7 and immediately after wins the lottery or receives a large inheritance. Not only can a person not dismiss his or her own case in that situation, but the person also needs to report the windfall or else face harsh consequences. Your bankruptcy schedules and statements need to be amended to include the windfall.
